A judge has ordered the federal government to pay $8.6 million to the former wife of an Air Force captain after a military doctor failed to diagnose a case of flesh eating bacteria. According to court documents, Dr. Daniel MacAlpine ignored the woman's initial complaints about pain in her arm because he believed she was a drug addict seeking prescription medication. The necrotizing fasciitis left Jean Phillips with severe damage to the arm and continuous, debilitating pain, the judge wrote in his decision. St. Louis Post Dispatch
