At your tailbone, there is a bundle of nerves that supply power to your lower legs, feet, bowel and bladder. Nerves are like telephone wires. They provide “electricity” throughout your body. If these nerves are damaged, permanent injury can result.
We have had cases where someone injures their back and has a slipped disc. Sometimes, this disc can actually be out so far that it chokes off the nerves running down the legs. Symptoms include numbness down the legs. The more worrisome symptoms are when you can't feel the urge to urinate or have a bowel movement.
Back pain is a common complaint that doctors hear but if there is this type of numbness, urgent action is required–that means surgery. An MRI of the back will often show that the nerves in the back are being damaged. Surgery is required and must be done within a small window of time.
In our cases, there is a failure to either do an MRI or get a surgeon involved quickly enough. We have had situations where there is permanent incontinence.
