The usual story goes something like this.
Chest x-rays done in the past show a suspicious nodule or spot that is either not picked up by a radiologist or is read as being normal when it is actually cancer.
Time goes by and now the cancer has spread from the lung to other parts of the body. More intensive treatment is needed and the prognosis is not good.
In these cases it may be that an earlier and proper diagnosis would have required much less treatment and better hopes for survival.
