During some deliveries, babies get stuck after the head comes out but the rest of the body does not.
Most of the time, the reason that a baby gets stuck is that his or her shoulder gets trapped. This can be due to babies who are excessively large such as babies of diabetic moms.
Obgyn doctors are supposed to be trained on how to get a baby unstuck without pulling on the baby's head. In some cases we have handled, we find that younger doctors-those who are just in their early training-may fail to remain calm. As a result, they pull too hard and damage the baby's nerves in the arm, which can lead to permanent paralysis and disfigurement.
The medical term for this type of injury is called erb's palsy or brachial plexus palsy.
