At Frank Spector Law we have handled cases involving sepsis malpractice. Sepsis is a severe illness in which the bloodstream is overwhelmed by bacteria. Sepsis can occur for a variety of reasons but the most important thing a doctor or hospital must do is to recognize the signs. Sepsis can be diagnosed by blood tests and by awareness that fever, chills and abnormal vital signs are common symptoms.
Treatment is by antibiotics. If diagnosed timely, sepsis can be cured. But if not, it can lead to death.
Failure to diagnose sepsis is a problem throughout the country. There was a recent jury verdict where a 52 year old woman died because of a delay in diagnosing and treating her sepsis. The jury returned a verdict for 3.8 million dollars for her family.
