What Is A Group B Strep Infection Medical Malpractice Case?

Posted by Frank Spector | May 07, 2012 | 0 Comments

Group B strep is a type of infection that can be passed from the mother to the baby.  If not treated, the infection can cause devastating damage to the baby, including brain damage and death.

Group B Strep is not a sexually transmitted disease. Many women test positive for Group B strep and have no symptoms at all. It can be a silent killer.

That's why the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) put out guidelines for testing and treating group b strep.

Basically, all pregnant moms should be tested at the end of the pregnancy. This is a simple test where a swab sample is taken.

If there is group b strep, antibiotic medicine must be given to mom during labor to prevent the spread to the baby.

Once the baby is born, antibiotics should be given to the baby as another protection against becoming infected.

Group B strep infection is preventable.

Make sure you ask your obgyn to take the swab.

If you are positive, make sure you tell the nurses at the hospital when you are in labor. In some cases, nurses and doctors fail to check the records to see.

A medical malpractice can occur when antibiotics are not given to the mom during labor and the baby becomes infected.
