Zithromax Can Cause Fatal Irregular Heart Rhythm

The U.S. Food and Drug administration warns that the popular antibiotic Zithromax can cause a potentially fatal heart rhythm in some patients.

The FDA said it can alter the electrical activity of the heart. Doctors should use caution when prescribing Zithromax.

At risk patients include:

♦ Slower than normal heart rates

♦ Patients who take certain drugs to treat abnormal heart rhythms

♦ Patients with tosades de pointes- a rare heart abnormality

The FDA has updated its drug labels.
